Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the chairperson of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) in Fiji, has expressed significant concern regarding the decline of the country’s indigenous languages and cultural heritage. During a recent two-day GCC meeting, the urgency of preserving these vital elements of Fijian identity was emphasized.
Ratu Viliame highlighted that language serves not merely as a tool for communication, but as a fundamental aspect of a community’s identity. He cautioned that if the indigenous languages continue to diminish, it could lead to a broader erosion of cultural identity, which may have serious implications for the future of Fiji.
He reminisced about past discussions that pointed to social issues, such as the breakdown of family structures, as contributing factors to the diminishing transmission of language. He noted that neglect in parental guidance results in children adopting influences from peers and external environments, which may stray from traditional cultural values. The rise of social media was identified as a particular concern, often promoting foreign cultures at the expense of local traditions.
In response to these challenges, the GCC is taking proactive measures. They are engaging with educators and community leaders to explore effective solutions. One prominent suggestion is to reintroduce the Fijian language as a compulsory subject in primary schools nationwide. Ratu Viliame stated, “By emphasizing Fijian language education, we not only teach the language but also instill the accompanying cultural values in the next generation.”
This initiative reflects a hopeful approach towards preserving Fiji’s unique cultural identity while equipping children with the skills to navigate a modern world. Through committed educational reforms, the GCC aims to foster a greater appreciation of indigenous languages, ensuring that future generations can maintain a connection to their rich cultural heritage.
This proactive stance not only seeks to safeguard Fiji’s languages but also underscores the importance of cultural identity in a globalized world. By nurturing these values within the education system, Fiji can resiliently uphold its unique traditions while embracing progress.
