Preserving Fiji’s Cultural Identity: A Call to Action

The chairperson of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, has raised a significant concern regarding the decline of Fiji’s indigenous languages and culture. He emphasized the critical necessity for immediate action to safeguard these vital aspects of identity. During a recent two-day meeting, the council members expressed their worries that a decline in language proficiency could ultimately threaten Fiji’s cultural identity, potentially leading to severe implications in the future.

Ratu Viliame articulated that language transcends mere communication; it is an intrinsic part of a community’s identity. He pointed out that societal issues, especially the erosion of family guidance, play a considerable role in the diminishing transmission of language. He noted, “When we neglect our children, when they are not guided at home, they leave the house, meet other kids, and adopt new ideas—many of which are not in line with our cultural values.” Additionally, he highlighted the role of social media in propagating foreign cultures and languages, further endangering local traditions if not managed wisely.

In light of these challenges, the GCC is taking proactive steps. They have initiated discussions with relevant stakeholders, including local chiefs, to formulate effective strategies to tackle these concerns. One of the most crucial suggestions from these dialogues is to reintroduce the Fijian language as a mandatory subject in primary schools throughout the nation.
