Today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting with leaders from key essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority, Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority. The goal of the meeting was to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are in place to assist communities that may be affected by the anticipated rainfall.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority, main connecting roads on the island are currently clear, and accessibility remains unaffected, even after heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided updated forecasts that have allowed stakeholders to improve their preparedness efforts.

In light of the forecast, the Ministry of Education has been alerted to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to take precautionary measures and consider relocating to higher ground during daylight hours to reduce potential risks. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel at night to ensure personal safety and protect first responders.

Farmers are also urged to move their livestock to safer locations and take appropriate steps to safeguard their livelihoods. Rainima stressed that public safety is paramount and advised everyone to heed weather advisories, stay informed through radio updates, and act promptly, especially those in vulnerable areas. He reassured residents that support is available, encouraging those in need to contact local authorities or police.

The Commissioner’s Office will keep a close watch on the situation and provide ongoing updates as needed.
