The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions expected in the next 48 hours. In a meeting today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima coordinated with leaders from key services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, as well as the Land Transport Authority, to ensure preparedness and resource allocation to assist affected communities.
The FRA has confirmed that all connecting roads on the island remain clear despite heavy rainfall overnight, so accessibility is not an immediate concern. Updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service have furnished stakeholders with a detailed weather forecast, which is instrumental in enhancing preparedness plans.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has been advised to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take proactive measures by moving to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate potential risks. The public is also advised to minimize nighttime travel to enhance safety for both themselves and first responders. If any individuals are uncertain about evacuation centers or require assistance, they are encouraged to reach out to local authorities or police.
Rainima has specifically advised farmers to relocate livestock to higher ground and take necessary precautions to protect their livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety during this period, urging residents to stay informed through weather advisories, remain calm, and seek help if needed.
The Commissioner’s Office is committed to closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates as necessary.
This proactive approach to preparing for inclement weather reflects a strong commitment to community safety and resilience. By encouraging early action and collaboration among various services, the authorities are fostering a sense of community strength and ensuring that residents are well-prepared to face potential challenges.
