Prepare Now: Central Eastern Fiji Faces Water Disruptions Amid Heavy Rains

Residents in the Central Eastern Region are urged to prepare for possible water disruptions due to recent heavy rainfall and flooding. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has indicated that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist, making it essential for people to stockpile sufficient water for two to three days while they still can.

WAF highlighted that heavy rains can severely affect water supply systems, causing blockages at intake points and leading to low levels in reservoirs. The increased rainfall also raises water turbidity, as rainwater washes soil and sediment into the water sources, compounded by floodwaters carrying additional debris.

In the event that water disruptions occur, families who have prepared by storing water will have resources to meet their immediate needs. WAF is closely monitoring the situation and is taking steps to mitigate the impact on communities.

Residents in flood-prone areas may face temporary interruptions in water service. WAF teams will address any issues related to blocked intakes and flooding, but repairs will only commence when safety allows.

Emergency measures include:

1. Water Conservation: Customers should limit water usage to essential needs.
2. Storage Recommendations: If safe, residents are advised to fill containers and bathtubs with clean water for emergency use before severe weather arrives.
3. Regular Updates: Keep informed by checking WAF’s official channels, such as their Facebook page, for information on the water supply status.
4. Preparedness Kits: It is recommended that residents assemble an emergency kit that includes bottled water and essential supplies.
