Support or Resignation: Who Will Lead Fiji Forward?

Prasad Backs Rabuka: A Call for Unity in Political Turmoil

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has reaffirmed his steadfast support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka amid mounting calls from critics for Rabuka’s resignation. This response came during an appearance on the FBC TV program “Your Voice,” where Prasad addressed the concerns following the government’s recent struggle to secure a 75 percent majority vote for the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025.

Prasad characterized the voices advocating for the Prime Minister’s resignation as a reflection of desperation rather than legitimate criticism, asserting that these individuals lack effective solutions to the nation’s challenges. He emphasized the need for credible dialogues, stating, “All you hear is statements, shooting here, shooting there… trying to use social media and working with fakers who are based outside of the country to create this.”

In his defense of Rabuka, Prasad underscored the Prime Minister’s historical significance and accomplishments, describing him as a dedicated statesman who is open to collaborating with opposition leaders to promote national development. Prasad called upon the leaders opposing Rabuka to exercise generosity and compassion, particularly in discussions surrounding modifying the 2013 Constitution.

This conversation reflects earlier remarks made by Prasad about the necessity of mutual respect and teamwork within a coalition government. He noted that while differing opinions are part of the political landscape, they should be approached with civility. The supportive relationship between Prasad and Rabuka signifies a commitment to fostering trust in governance, which could pave the way for a more unified and forward-thinking approach to the nation’s issues, ultimately offering a hopeful perspective for both the government and the citizens of Fiji.
