Power Struggle: PM Rabuka on Unfulfilled Election Promises

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the power-sharing agreement of The People’s Alliance (PA) with its coalition partners is hindering the party’s ability to fulfill its promises from the 2022 elections. During the party’s assembly in Lautoka, Mr. Rabuka explained that the lack of a political power monopoly following the elections has led to challenges in achieving the desired outcomes.

He emphasized that for the party to meet its commitments, it needs to gain actual power rather than merely holding office. Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka expressed his intention to run in the upcoming 2026 General Election, although he noted that the decision would ultimately rest with the party’s members and executives.

“We came into office on December 24, 2022; however, we did not come into power as that power is shared with two other political parties,” he remarked. He acknowledged that the inability to achieve certain objectives stems from this shared power structure.

Looking ahead to the next general elections in 2026, the Prime Minister indicated that The People’s Alliance should have a clear understanding of the work necessary to fulfill its election promises outlined in the party’s manifesto. He pointed out the importance of aligning the manifesto with the expectations of both the Fijian populace and the international community.

During a closed-door meeting with party executives, financial reports were presented along with a report from party president Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci, the appointment of an external auditor, and submissions from youth and women’s branches.
