Power Outage Sparks Safety Warning in Central Division

A major power disruption occurred in the Central Division this afternoon due to a fallen tree on the 132kV Transmission Line connecting Wailoa Power Station to the Cunningham Road Zone Substation in Suva. Hasmukh Patel, CEO of Energy Fiji Limited, reported that the incident happened when a tree was being cut down in Waibau and accidentally fell onto the high-voltage transmission line, affecting the flow of electricity from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the substation.

Patel stated, “Our teams are on their way to remove the fallen tree from the transmission line before it can be re-energized.” While efforts are underway to restore power to the affected areas through the Kinoya Power Station, he noted that a complete restoration for the Central Division may take some time.

He emphasized the importance of safety, urging the public to treat all power lines as live and to maintain a safe distance, as there is a possibility for any line to become electrified unexpectedly. Patel apologized for the unplanned power interruption, which was beyond their control, and requested the understanding and cooperation of all customers during this time.
