Power Outage Shocks Central Division: What Happened?

A fallen tree on the 132kV Transmission Line from the Wailoa Power Station to the Cunningham Road Zone Substation in Suva led to a significant power supply interruption in the Central Division this afternoon.

Hasmukh Patel, the chief executive of Energy Fiji Limited, reported that the tree fell onto the transmission line after someone was cutting it in Waibau. This incident disrupted the power supply evacuation from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the substation in Suva.

“Our teams are en route to remove the fallen tree from the transmission line before we can restore power,” Patel stated.

While efforts are underway to reestablish service to the affected areas via the Kinoya Power Station, restoring full power to the Central Division may take some time.

“We urge everyone to treat all power lines as live and to maintain a safe distance, as they may become electrified unexpectedly,” he added.

Patel also expressed regret for the unplanned power outage and the inconvenience it has caused, noting that the situation was beyond their control and appealing for understanding from their valued customers.
