Power Outage Hits Central Division: What Happened?

The Central Division faced a widespread power outage yesterday due to a tree falling on Energy Fiji Ltd’s (EFL) 132,000-volt transmission line in Waibau. EFL CEO Hasmukh Patel stated that the disruption occurred around 2:28 PM.

According to Patel, reports indicated that a tree being cut in Waibau accidentally fell onto the transmission line, leading to the interruption of power supply from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the Cunningham Road Zone Substation in Suva. Emergency teams were dispatched to remove the tree from the line before restoring power.

While efforts were underway to reinstate supply to the affected areas through the Kinoya Power Station, Patel noted that it would take time to fully restore power across the Central Division. He urged the public to avoid all power lines during this period.

EFL apologized for the unexpected power disruption and the inconvenience it caused, highlighting that the situation was beyond their control, and requested the understanding and cooperation of their customers.
