Concerns are growing as it has been revealed that over half of the population is struggling to make ends meet. This situation reflects a troubling reality for the nation.
During the launch of the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the urgent need to bridge the inequality gap and combat poverty. He pointed out that more than 50% of the population is affected by these issues.
There is a consensus that every citizen must receive the necessary support to tackle inequality and poverty directly. Mr. Kamikamica highlighted findings from the Asian Development Bank’s income survey conducted from 2019 to 2020. It reveals that approximately 29.9% of the population, or 258,053 individuals, live below the poverty line of less than $86.10 per month, with an additional 200,000 people experiencing financial difficulties.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that these numbers have risen due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the increasing cost of living over the past four years, largely driven by inflation. This results in significant disparity affecting over 52% of the population. These statistics have also been corroborated by the Household and Income Survey.
Rebuilding the nation and empowering individuals through unity is a daunting task when more than half the population is struggling. This reality reinforces the government’s commitment to address these challenges in both the short and medium term, adopting creative solutions rather than routine approaches.
The alarming statistics surrounding poverty necessitate urgent action to address the numerous challenges faced by the populace. However, the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 brings a sense of hope, as it offers a structured strategy for tackling pressing national issues.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s message is clear: we must enthusiastically and creatively confront the inequality gap and poverty. Understanding the factors that have driven many individuals into hardship is essential. For the benefit of our citizens and the nation as a whole, unity and collaborative efforts towards solutions are critical.
If the aim of the National Development Plan is to enhance national prosperity, reduce poverty, and improve the overall economic and social wellbeing of the population, then it is a worthy pursuit that requires attention and support. Action is imperative.
