Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reflected on the Coalition Government’s political journey over the past two years, noting the challenges he faced in the lead-up to the 2022 General Election. He expressed that he was often labeled a “snake” and was subjected to various accusations, emphasizing the frequent use of race-related rhetoric during that period.
Rabuka remarked, “I was demonized, accused of many things, and labeled a snake,” but stated that he has developed a resilience to personal insults. He recalled similar experiences of derogatory comments directed at him and former Prime Minister Jai Ram Reddy during his previous term from 1992 to 1999.
He highlighted that both he and Professor Biman Prasad encountered similar levels of negative campaigning in 2018 and 2022, acknowledging the resulting fear this created within the electorate, particularly among the Indo-Fijian community. “Perhaps I should introduce myself again—I am Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, whose favorite dish is dhal and rice,” he added, in an effort to reconnect with constituents.
Rabuka stressed the trust he and Prasad have built, pointing to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for their post-election coalition government as a testament to their mutual respect. He urged the Indo-Fijian community to trust in his sincerity as a national leader, stating, “Trust me when I say we are rebuilding Fiji’s future together, united as a three-party coalition government.”
Looking ahead, Rabuka expressed confidence that the electoral landscape will significantly differ by the time the People’s Coalition Government approaches the next election.
