Political Turmoil: Election Supervisor Takes Legal Action Amid Growing Scandal

The situation surrounding Barbara Malimali has intensified, as Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa has recently filed a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The report, lodged on November 28, 2024, with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, claims abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses related to an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into Ms. Malimali.

This development comes amid scrutiny of Ms. Malimali’s appointment due to a Commission of Inquiry, while the CID continues to investigate allegations of misconduct during her time as chairperson of the Electoral Commission. Mr. Chew confirmed that an investigation into Ms. Mataiciwa’s report is currently in progress.

Ms. Mataiciwa stated that her decision to file the complaint followed requests for responses from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission on November 8 and the Chief Registrar’s Office on November 19. She noted that these requests pertain to accusations made by Ms. Malimali, which allege that Ms. Mataiciwa aided in her arrest. Additionally, the Chief Registrar’s Office sought her responses regarding a professional misconduct complaint made by Ms. Malimali.

Claiming that Ms. Malimali’s actions constitute intimidation due to her role as a key witness in an ongoing CID investigation, Ms. Mataiciwa expressed concern over the implications of the allegations. In a twist, former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC Francis Puleiwai has also accused Ms. Malimali of abusing her powers by imposing a stop departure order earlier this year, with this matter now referred to the CID for further investigation.

Attempts to reach Ms. Malimali for comments were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

This challenging scenario illustrates the complex interplay of legal challenges and accusations among officials, but it also emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency in governance. As investigations proceed, there is hope that they will clarify the facts and reinforce public trust in the electoral process. Ensuring all parties are held to a standard of integrity is essential for the democratic health of any nation.
