Political Turmoil: Allegations of Corruption in FICAC Appointments

Mahendra Chaudhry, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, has alleged that certain ministers undergoing investigation by FICAC for submitting false declarations and engaging in corrupt activities are attempting to influence the selection of a new Commissioner for FICAC. Chaudhry argued that these ministers aim to avoid prosecution by replacing Acting Assistant Commissioner Francis Puleiwai with a candidate of their preference.

He mentioned that there have previously been claims of interference from Barbara Malimali, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, regarding the Registrar’s decision to refer the ministers to FICAC. “A report concerning Malimali has been submitted to FICAC, and we believe it is currently under investigation,” Chaudhry stated.

Chaudhry expressed concern that FICAC, under Puleiwai’s leadership, is facing substantial pressure in its probe against the ministers. He also noted that FLP has received information suggesting that Malimali may have expressed interest in the position of FICAC Commissioner, raising questions about her potential candidacy given the circumstances.
