Political Tensions Rise as Presidential Nomination Sparks Controversy

There appears to be a possible division within Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s The People’s Alliance (PA) party that contributed to the postponement of the Presidential nomination in Parliament yesterday. The appointment of the new President was scheduled as item four on the agenda but was unexpectedly withdrawn after a government nominee caused disagreement among party members.

Prime Minister Rabuka, who has not disclosed his choice for a candidate, acknowledged that concerns had been raised regarding some of the proposed nominees. He stated, “I will not share details, but I can confirm that there was some discomfort with the nominees, which was highlighted to me by the Honourable Speaker.”

He further mentioned, “I requested to withdraw my nomination, and he likely consulted the Leader of the Opposition as well. In fairness to both sides, proceeding under uncertainty regarding the nominees was not viable.”

It has been reported that the government initially supported Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, anticipating backing from the Group of Nine bloc, led by Ioane Naivalurua. However, internal factions within the PA are advocating for alternative candidates such as Ratu Epenisa Cakobau (The Vunivalu) and Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci (Tui Nadi), who were discussed at the party’s recent annual general assembly held in the West.

Additionally, it is understood that other parties in the coalition have endorsed the Prime Minister’s recommendation to extend the current term of Ratu Willame Katonivere as President of the Republic of Fiji.

Ratu Vuniyani, a key contender, stated that he was unaware of his nomination but recognized the support he received from PA members across the Central, Eastern, and Western divisions. “When I learned that three divisions had nominated me, I chose not to decline,” Ratu Vuniyani said. “In my heart, I knew I was destined to be nominated as the President of Fiji, and I was prepared to accept that role.”

His recent resignation as party president during the PA’s executive council meeting has intensified speculation regarding his candidacy.
