Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided directly addressing whether any disciplinary measures would be taken against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, over her insubordination. Ms. Tabuya had made public statements advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty for drug criminals exploiting Fiji as a transit route for illegal drugs, an issue that should have been first discussed in Cabinet.
Earlier in the week, Mr. Rabuka indicated that Ms. Tabuya’s actions would be evaluated by the Cabinet. Her tendency to disregard Cabinet protocols has led to increasing calls for her removal from her ministerial position.
In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka expressed that he does not want to jump to conclusions regarding the situation. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been dealt with,” he remarked. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to address the issue. It was supposed to be dealt with by the Cabinet yesterday.”
He further emphasized that it was regrettable that Ms. Tabuya had publicly shared her opinions before any Cabinet discussions took place.
