Political Storm Erupts Over Controversial Appointment in Fiji

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has intensified his opposition to Barbara Malimali’s appointment, urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to take action. Chaudhry expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister has opted to remain passive, relying on the Judicial Service Commission that recommended Malimali for the Office of the President.

The leader of the Fiji Labour Party criticized Malimali’s appointment, particularly as she is under investigation for alleged abuse of office, claiming it contradicts the rule of law and undermines good governance principles. Chaudhry suggested that the appointment may have been politically motivated to shield Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, from charges of submitting false declarations to the Registrar of Political Parties.

He noted that seven other Cabinet ministers have also been referred to FICAC by the Registrar for similar infractions. This occurred after acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai was forced to resign, and Malimali was brought in from the Electoral Commission to lead FICAC.

Chaudhry expressed that the national response to the handling of Malimali’s appointment has been one of shock, leading to concerns within the business community and diminishing investor trust in the nation. He urged the Prime Minister not to remain a mere bystander, emphasizing the national importance of the situation.

He warned that failing to address this issue would strengthen public sentiment that the government prioritizes its own interests over integrity. Chaudhry also questioned Malimali’s intentions, highlighting her assertion to review files of senior political figures and her silence regarding her investigation, prompting concerns over potential bias in any proceedings against her. He cautioned that any efforts to impede or obscure the investigations could further intensify the already precarious circumstances.
