Sainiana Radrodro has officially declined an offer from Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu to be nominated as Speaker of Parliament. The former civil servant, journalist, and lawyer stated that the proposal, which was presented to her last week, took her by surprise.

In her response to Mr. Seruiratu, Ms. Radrodro expressed her astonishment, asking, “Why me?” She acknowledged that the Opposition might have considered her extensive experience in government and her legal expertise as qualifications for the role. However, despite the honor of the nomination, she firmly declined.

Ms. Radrodro is married to a sitting Member of Parliament and the Minister for Education, and she believes that accepting the position could be perceived as improper. “To preside over Parliament while my husband’s ministry is involved would, in my view, be improper. Any hint of bias, whether perceived or actual, is still bias,” she remarked. She highlighted the necessity for public trust in government leaders, stating that any decisions that could undermine that trust would not benefit anyone in the long run.

As a member of SODELPA, she emphasized the importance of presenting a united front, especially given her husband’s role as party leader within the Coalition Government. “It’s crucial for SODELPA to show stability to the people, stakeholders, and investors,” she asserted. Ms. Radrodro reiterated that, even if the Coalition Government were to vote in her favor, she would still refuse the nomination in order to avoid any appearance of favoritism or nepotism.

This situation showcases Ms. Radrodro’s commitment to integrity and the principles of good governance, an essential aspect in any democratic system. Her stance provides a positive model for public service, demonstrating that upholding ethics and transparency can build greater public trust in leadership.

Summary: Sainiana Radrodro has declined the offer to be the Speaker of Parliament due to concerns over potential bias stemming from her husband’s position as Minister for Education. As a member of SODELPA, she believes in the importance of presenting a united front and maintaining public trust in government.
