A fierce conflict has emerged between Opposition MP Ketan Lal and Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh, triggered by sharp criticisms regarding their participation in COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The two were part of the Fijian delegation at the recently concluded summit.
The exchange began when Mr. Singh took to Facebook to express his belief that many attendees at the conference were merely wasting time and becoming a burden on their respective nations. He suggested a streamlined approach for future delegations, emphasizing the need for a focused team of professionals and negotiators who can convey clear messages at COP30 next year.
In response, Mr. Lal labeled Mr. Singh’s remarks as hypocritical, pointing out that Singh’s last-minute addition to the delegation, high travel costs, and minimal involvement during the event were inappropriate uses of taxpayer money. He expressed disappointment at Mr. Singh’s criticism of Fiji’s negotiators, arguing that the Minister’s contribution was limited and self-serving.
Mr. Lal went on to highlight that Mr. Singh traveled in business class with multiple stopovers and attended only a few side events, questioning his engagement and presence at crucial moments during the conference.
Mr. Singh retaliated, questioning Mr. Lal’s credibility and challenging his capability to represent Fiji on a global scale. He urged Mr. Lal to reimburse the state for his travel expenses if he truly stood by his claims. Singh defended his own selection to Parliament, asserting that he had gained his position through merit, rather than through a minimal vote count.
The exchange escalated as Singh mocked Mr. Lal’s political affiliations, suggesting that he was unworthy of respect in Fiji’s political arena. He accused Mr. Lal of failing to address important matters at the conference and claimed that his political future is bleak heading into the next General Election.
