Political Reconciliation: Fiji’s Controversial Prisoner Release Sparks Debate

Crossbencher Member of Parliament (G9) Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his support for the release of George Speight, a civilian coup leader who was granted Presidential immunity. Mr. Bulitavu is the first G9 MP to respond to Mr. Speight’s release, which was approved following a review by the Mercy Commission.

“He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move away from our past and seek restoration through reconciliation,” Mr. Bulitavu stated. He emphasized that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is spearheading the reconciliation process, and Speight’s release is a significant step forward.

Mr. Bulitavu, who noted that few politicians have experienced imprisonment like he has, argued that rehabilitated prisoners deserve a second chance. He called for society to change its perception of former inmates and embrace their reintegration after completing the Fiji Corrections Service rehabilitation program.
