Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube has called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in light of the government’s failure to secure a majority vote in Parliament for amending the 2013 Constitution. Narube characterized the vote’s outcome as a significant embarrassment, asserting that Rabuka must accept full responsibility for this miscalculation. He emphasized the need for political leaders to accurately gauge support before introducing major legislative changes.
Narube criticized Rabuka for not being prepared ahead of the vote on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025, stating that shifting blame does not resolve the issues at hand. He reiterated his stance that the proper method for addressing the contentious 2013 Constitution would be to challenge its legal validity through the courts rather than attempting amendments via Parliament.
Expressing that this recent setback has revitalized Unity Fiji and its allies’ efforts to initiate legal action against the constitution’s legitimacy, Narube stressed that the current government has failed to demonstrate credible leadership. He urged the Prime Minister to act honorably and resign, emphasizing that Rabuka’s position is now untenable in light of the repeated failures under his administration.
In the backdrop of these developments, Narube’s previous warnings about the significance of political integrity and accountability remain relevant, especially as Fiji approaches the 2026 elections. He has encouraged voters to choose leaders committed to genuine public service, economic improvement, and unity among the diverse communities of Fiji.
Amid this political turmoil, there remains hope that public engagement and demands for accountability may pave the way for more effective governance. This situation presents an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in shaping their democracy, potentially leading to a brighter future for Fiji by fostering transparent and responsible leadership.
