An appeal has been filed against the decision by the Registrar of Political Parties to deregister a former ruling party. FijiLive has confirmed that the appeal was lodged over the weekend. The deadline for lodging an appeal was Sunday, July 14, 2024. A decision on the appeal is expected within 21 days.
The Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa, deregistered the party on July 1, 2024, in accordance with section 12(4) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act, 2013. The party was notified to amend its constitution to include provisions required under Schedule 2 of the Act and was given until June 28 to make the necessary changes.
As the party did not comply with these requirements, it was deregistered effective from July 1 and given 14 days to appeal the decision.
