Former MP Tanya Waqanika has expressed her full support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s campaign to bolster his backing in Parliament as he seeks to amend the 2013 Constitution. In a conversation with FijiLive, Waqanika emphasized her confidence in the Prime Minister’s political acumen, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy, and if they need to get the numbers to change the Constitution, so be it.”

The Prime Minister has publicly acknowledged that his government currently holds around 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, translating to 38 seats. However, he noted that they are still four votes short of the required 42 for a three-quarter majority needed to initiate constitutional amendments, as outlined during a recent media briefing.

Rabuka reiterated the goal of reviewing and amending the Constitution to better align with democratic principles and ensure good governance. He acknowledged the necessity of garnering additional support, stating, “42 votes are required to meet the first almost impossible hurdle.” His administration aims to craft a constitutional framework that reflects Fiji’s multi-ethnic and multicultural society and promotes inclusive representation.

Waqanika’s endorsement of Rabuka’s efforts aligns with his vision, which calls for dialogue and consensus-building across diverse communities within Fiji. This approach is seen as essential in overcoming the challenges posed by an opposition that retains around 30 percent of parliamentary votes and could impact the overall governance framework.

In summary, while Prime Minister Rabuka faces significant hurdles in amending the Constitution, Waqanika’s support signals a potentially positive direction for his coalition government. Their collective efforts could foster greater unity and collaboration within Fiji, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and representative governance structure that caters to the aspirations of all Fijians.
