President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office by the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has determined that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 a.m. to appoint a new President. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is nominating Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Originally, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, as it was listed as item four on the parliamentary agenda. However, this meeting was delayed after Prime Minister Rabuka disclosed the potential for a disagreement regarding the presidential nomination. Consequently, Rabuka requested that the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, withdraw item four, citing some “discomfort” with his presidential nomination. The Opposition has not made any public comments regarding their nomination.
