Political Drama Unfolds: Former Minister’s Trial Delayed Until 2024

Former Fisheries and Forestry Minister Kalaveti Ravu will learn his fate next year as he faces charges alongside former Regional Manager North, Tekata Toaisi. Toaisi entered a plea of ‘not guilty’ today regarding allegations of aiding and abetting.

The two appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou at the Suva Magistrates Court this morning. Toaisi denied one count of aiding and abetting the abuse of office.

During the proceedings, FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu stated that there was no admission made during the caution interview. Ravu’s attorney, Lavi Rokoika, indicated that she is prepared for trial, while Toaisi’s lawyer, Joji Cakau, also expressed readiness and requested an early trial date.

FICAC is yet to provide three additional documents to the defense lawyers. Ravuikadavu mentioned that FICAC plans to present 16 or more witnesses in this case. The court announced that the trial is scheduled to commence in February next year.

Ravu faces one count of abuse of office, with allegations stating that between July 25, 2023, and August 31, 2023, he interfered in a lawful investigation by the Ministry of Forestry into the illegal trade of banned species of beche-de-mer. It is claimed that Toaisi, while working in the ministry, aided Ravu in committing the offence.

The case has been adjourned until December 19 for a pre-trial conference.
