Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has rebutted assertions made by Savenaca Narube, the leader of the Unity Fiji party, and other politicians, who claim that the Government is unable to address the rising cost of living. In response to Narube’s criticism regarding the Government’s focus on salary hikes amid the struggles of ordinary families, Prasad expressed confusion over where the notion originated.
Narube pointed out that the Government is failing to tackle a variety of pressing issues, including escalating living costs, increasing corruption, the drug crisis threatening youth, and climbing national debt. He characterized the Minister’s comments as an attempt to shift blame onto citizens for having high expectations.
However, Professor Prasad highlighted the positive developments in the economy, indicating a growth rate of approximately 3.8 percent, decreasing inflation, increasing investments, prosperous businesses, and a booming tourism sector. He asserted that through effective macroeconomic management, the Government has secured a sustainable path for national debt.
Prasad noted that Narube had not offered any constructive solutions to the challenges mentioned and countered the claim that the Government has failed to deliver on its commitments. He encouraged Narube, drawing on his experience as a former governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, to engage in a more honest evaluation of the data and policies before making disparaging statements.
Furthermore, the Minister underlined improvements in income levels and living standards, mentioning increased funding in vital sectors such as health, water, and agriculture. He also provided updates on efforts to combat drug abuse, including the establishment of the Narcotics Bureau, collaborative drug busts, and plans for rehabilitation centers in cooperation with health and correctional services and community stakeholders.
This exchange highlights ongoing discussions surrounding economic management and social issues within Fiji, reflecting the complexity of governance priorities and community needs. As the Government combats these challenges, there remains hope for sustained growth and improved living conditions for all citizens.
