Pramod Chand, President of the National Federation Party, has strongly criticized former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, accusing him of having a compromised reputation and lacking political morality. Chand’s comments came in response to statements made by Chaudhry during the FLP Annual Delegates Conference in Nadi, where Chaudhry described the current Coalition Government as self-serving and lacking in integrity.
Chand contended that Chaudhry’s previous convictions for financial impropriety call into question his ability to discuss matters of transparency and accountability. He reminded the public of Chaudhry’s history, particularly highlighting a conviction that resulted in a $1 million fine for concealing substantial funds in overseas accounts. Chand emphasized that Chaudhry is attempting to rewrite history and divert attention from his own corrupt practices.
Furthermore, Chand criticized Chaudhry for allegedly exploiting vulnerable communities, specifically mentioning the financial harm caused to cane growers and their families following Chaudhry’s support for a refugee camp that benefited only him and his family. He condemned this as deceitful and corrupt behavior.
Chand also noted that during Chaudhry’s brief tenure as Prime Minister, he misappropriated taxpayer funds for personal use, including renovations to his home. He recalled that during his role as finance minister after the 2006 coup, Chaudhry’s dismissive comments about the rising prices of essential goods further illustrated his disconnect from the struggles faced by everyday citizens.
Chand concluded by asserting that the current Coalition Government has been tirelessly working to restore democracy, accountability, and good governance, which he claims were undermined during Chaudhry’s time in power.
The National Federation Party continues to restore faith in the political process, aiming to foster a more transparent and accountable government for the people of Fiji.
Overall, this exchange serves to highlight the ongoing tensions within Fijian politics, illustrating how past actions can continue to shape current political narratives. The Coalition’s commitment to good governance is a hopeful step towards repairing and strengthening the democratic framework in Fiji.
