Political Apologies: A Call for Decorum in Parliament

The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, has issued an apology to the House for his inappropriate behavior and the use of unparliamentary language during his Ministerial Statement last Tuesday, as outlined under Standing Orders 80. Singh acknowledged the issue, stating, “I would like to apologize to the House for any language or untoward comments I may have used that may have offended any individual Member of this House.”

In a similar vein, Opposition MP Praveen Bala also expressed regret under the same standing order for any hurt he may have caused by using improper language.

Following these apologies, Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu addressed the members, urging them to maintain decorum in their conduct. He remarked, “You seem to take off at a very speedy pace when you are cool to when you blow up your position. So maybe you have been counting your money a lot, which is why I think it is.”

Ratu Naiqama emphasized the importance of considering the public and the children who watch the proceedings both on television and in the gallery.
