Amendments have been implemented to a policy related to overtime and time off in lieu (TOIL), which previously disrupted services at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s (CWMH) radiology and pharmacy departments earlier this week, according to Parmesh Chand, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service.
In response to inquiries, Chand confirmed that the necessary changes were made following consultations with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to effectively address the issue. He stated, “The matter has been satisfactorily resolved. The interests of the ordinary members of the public are always paramount in our service delivery efforts.”
Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, also noted that the issue was resolved amicably after discussions with the Civil Service Ministry. He expressed gratitude towards the Ministry for their quick response and action on the proposal, assuring that the results will be communicated to health facilities and affected staff, who will be relieved to learn that the issue has been resolved.
However, Judith Kotobalavu, general secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA), raised concerns about the situation, stating it highlights a lack of strategic oversight in the public healthcare system. She emphasized the need for the ministry to manage its overtime budget more competently and to support the public servants providing essential services, rather than outsourcing to private providers. Kotobalavu assured that the FPSA would continue advocating for fair compensation and the maintenance of adequate healthcare services.
This series of developments suggests a commitment from government bodies to listen to concerns and take swift action to improve service delivery in healthcare. By resolving these issues, there is potential for improved healthcare systems that can effectively support both staff and the community, ultimately enhancing patient care and safety.
In summary, the swift response and adjustments made by the Ministries signify a positive step towards ensuring reliable healthcare services in Fiji, demonstrating a collaborative approach among government entities in addressing operational challenges.
