Recent amendments to the overtime and time off in lieu (TOIL) policy have been implemented to address disruptions in service delivery at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s (CWMH) radiology and pharmacy departments. Parmesh Chand, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, confirmed the adjustments following consultations with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
Chand expressed satisfaction with the resolution, emphasizing that the public’s interests are a priority in the service delivery efforts. Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary of the Health Ministry, acknowledged the cooperative efforts to resolve the issue and stated that the improvements would be communicated to health facilities and the staff affected, who would be relieved by the positive outcome.
However, concerns were raised by Judith Kotobalavu, the general secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA). She highlighted the need for increased strategic oversight within the Ministry, urging a focus on enhancing the public healthcare system rather than outsourcing services to private entities. Kotobalavu reaffirmed the FPSA’s commitment to advocating for fair compensation and the sustaining of essential public services.
This situation, although initially challenging, showcases the importance of effective communication and collaboration between government agencies, which has led to a swift and positive outcome. It highlights the dedication to improving the public health system and ensuring that healthcare workers receive the support they need to provide quality care. As these changes take effect, there is hope for a strengthened healthcare framework that prioritizes the needs of the community.
