Five police officers have been charged with serious offenses, including sexual crimes, assault, drug-related charges, and violation of a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, as announced last month.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci noted that police officers can also be victims of crime while performing their duties. He referenced 25 instances of serious assaults against police, along with one case of obstruction and nine incidents of resisting arrest.
The Fiji Police Force acknowledged the difficulties of policing, emphasizing that officers face life-threatening situations regularly. Raikaci expressed commitment to overcoming these challenges for the benefit of the community.
He reported a 17 percent reduction in the overall crime rate compared to July, attributing this decline to the combined efforts of law enforcement and the community in addressing crime.
Raikaci underscored the importance of collaboration between police and community leaders, urging them to maintain their efforts in crime prevention. “There is strength in numbers, and together we can curb illegal activities and protect our women and children and vulnerable communities by reporting suspicious activities and crimes,” he stated.
