Police Under Fire: Claims of Illegal Taxi Operations by Officers

The Divisional Police Commander, SSP Kemueli Baledrokadroka, emphasized the necessity for concrete evidence regarding allegations that police officers use their personal vehicles as illegal taxis. His statement came in response to claims made by Mahend Prasad, president of the Labasa Taxi Association, about certain officers operating private vehicles in this manner.

SSP Baledrokadroka noted that the Fiji Police Force does not monitor the private vehicles of the officers. “Proof is required for such claims,” he stated. “We cannot simply make accusations of this nature, as they are serious.” He clarified that police officers often drive their own cars for personal reasons, such as running errands or transporting family members. “The vehicle belongs to them, and they can drive it however they wish,” he added.

In his response, Mr. Prasad mentioned that he had forwarded the names of several officers he believes are using their private cars as taxis to a senior officer, stressing the need to address the concerns raised about this issue.
