Police Scandal: Five Officers Charged in Shocking Case

Five police officers are facing serious charges, including sexual offences, assault, drug-related offences, and violations of a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, after being charged last month.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci emphasized that police officers can also be victims of crime, particularly while on duty. He reported 25 instances of serious assaults against police officers, one case where an officer was obstructed while performing their duties, and nine cases of resisting arrest.

The Fiji Police Force acknowledged the difficulties of policing, noting that officers put their lives and safety at risk each day in their roles. Raikaci pointed out that this is part of the profession they chose, and they remain dedicated to tackling these challenges for the benefit of their communities.

Compared to July, the overall crime rate has decreased by 17%, which Raikaci attributed to the cooperative efforts of both the police and the community in combating crime. He expressed gratitude for the support from religious and community leaders in these efforts.

Raikaci called for religious and community leaders to maintain their momentum in promoting collaboration for safer communities. He stressed that collective action is vital in reducing illegal activities and safeguarding women, children, and vulnerable populations, encouraging the reporting of suspicious activities and crimes.
