Police are set to ramp up their drug-related operations during this festive season, as stated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu. He emphasized that the initiative against drugs adopts a comprehensive strategy aimed at dismantling and disrupting drug syndicates.
Mr. Driu clarified that their efforts extend beyond general operations to include covert actions facilitated by their intelligence unit. Operations will target not just residential areas and known individuals but will also focus on intercepting vehicles and other identified hotspots based on received intelligence.
He expressed gratitude for the support from local chiefs and the village communities, noting this collective effort is essential in managing the ongoing drug issue. Although recent operations have shown a marked decline in methamphetamine seizures, there has been an increase in marijuana-related findings.
As of last week, several arrests were made thanks to police K9 units, which conducted a search on a vessel arriving from Kadavu at the Narain Jetty. The latest data indicates a lowered discovery rate for meth but a notable rise in marijuana cases.
Mr. Driu also mentioned that road operations would be enhanced with the establishment of checkpoints and roadblocks designed to monitor and influence drivers’ behavior. He observed that the presence of police checkpoints tends to improve compliance among drivers, as they adjust their driving habits upon seeing law enforcement.
This proactive strategy not only aims to combat drug-related issues but also promotes safer roads during the holiday season, which is often accompanied by increased travel. By maintaining a strong community engagement and visible police presence, there is a hopeful outlook that the collaborative efforts will lead to even more significant declines in drug activities, fostering a safer environment for everyone.
