Five police officers are facing serious charges, including sexual offences, assault, drug-related charges, and violations of a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, which were filed last month.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci emphasized that law enforcement personnel can also be victims of crime, especially while performing their official duties.
He reported that there were 25 incidents of serious assaults against police officers, one case of obstruction during the performance of their duties, and nine cases of resisting arrest.
The Fiji Police Force acknowledged the challenges of policing, underlining that officers put their lives at risk each day while serving the community. Raikaci reaffirmed their commitment to facing these challenges head-on for the benefit of the public.
He noted a 17 percent reduction in the overall crime rate compared to July, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the police and the community in tackling crime.
The Acting Commissioner expressed gratitude for the support from religious and community leaders in the fight against crime, urging them to maintain their efforts and seek further collaboration for safer neighborhoods. Raikaci stated, “There’s strength in numbers, and together we can reduce illegal activities and safeguard our women, children, and vulnerable members of the community by reporting suspicious behavior and crimes.”
