A 28-year-old police officer has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case surrounding the death of a man in Suva earlier this year. Fifita Toma Tawake entered his plea yesterday before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court in Suva, where his trial was set to commence.

The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake and his friends had been consuming kava at JJ’s on the Park, now known as DeVos on the Park, before driving home. As they approached a set of traffic lights near Central St, a 47-year-old man was crossing the road when the lights turned red. Tawake’s vehicle reportedly ran the red light, leading the pedestrian to tap the rear of the car as a warning.

In response, and while under the influence of kava, Tawake exited the car and, without provocation, struck the man in the face. The man fell heavily onto the pavement. Witnesses described how Tawake and a friend moved the injured individual to the corner near Westpac Bank and left him exposed to the rain for approximately 40 minutes. Despite the severity of the situation, Tawake dismissed concerns from bystanders, claiming the man was merely unconscious and telling others to “mind their own business.”

Eventually, bystanders moved the fallen man to a sheltered area, and when a police vehicle arrived, Tawake instructed the officers to transport the victim to the hospital. Tragically, the individual later died from serious head injuries at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

The matter has been postponed until Wednesday for final submissions, with Justice Rajasinghe expected to announce the sentence on Friday.

This incident underscores the importance of responsible behavior, especially for those in positions of authority. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of actions taken in moments of frustration and intoxication. The upcoming sentencing will undoubtedly highlight the judicial system’s commitment to accountability and justice, potentially serving as a crucial lesson for society regarding responsible conduct and the preservation of life.
