A 28-year-old police officer has admitted to manslaughter following the death of a man in Suva earlier this year. Fifita Toma Tawake entered his plea before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court, just as his trial was set to commence.
Details presented in court revealed that on January 13, Tawake had been drinking kava with friends at a local establishment before driving home. As they approached a traffic light at Central Street, a 47-year-old man was crossing the road when the light turned red. Prosecutor Simone Seruvatu stated that the man gently tapped Tawake’s car to alert him to the traffic light violation.
In a state of frustration and under the influence of kava, Tawake got out of his vehicle and, without provocation, struck the man in the face. The victim fell to the ground, resulting in severe injuries. Witnesses observed that rather than seeking immediate help, Tawake and a friend moved the man to a nearby corner and left him exposed to the rain for approximately 40 minutes, dismissing concerns from bystanders.
When a worker approached Tawake for assistance, he reportedly told him to “mind his own business.” Eventually, bystanders took action to move the man to safety. After police arrived, Tawake instructed them to take the victim to the hospital, but the man later died from critical head injuries.
The court case has been adjourned until Wednesday for final arguments, with Justice Rajasinghe anticipated to announce the sentence on Friday.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of responsible behavior and the serious consequences of actions influenced by substances like kava. It serves as a reminder for individuals to remain vigilant and accountable, especially in situations that could escalate.
In summary, the case brings to light the crucial need for awareness in social settings and the potential dangers that can arise when substance use is involved. As the court prepares to deliver a sentence, it is hoped that justice will be served, providing a semblance of closure to the victim’s family and friends.
