A 28-year-old police officer, Fifita Toma Tawake, has entered a guilty plea for manslaughter related to the death of a 47-year-old man in Suva earlier this year. The plea was made before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court in Suva, just as the trial was about to commence.

On January 13, Tawake was reportedly enjoying kava with friends at JJ’s on the Park, now renamed DeVos on the Park, before they drove home. At a traffic stop near Central Street, the victim was attempting to cross the road when Tawake’s vehicle allegedly ran a red light. In response, the victim touched the back of Tawake’s car to indicate the offense.

Under the influence of kava and seemingly frustrated, Tawake exited the vehicle and struck the victim in the face without any provocation. The impact caused the man to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Afterward, both Tawake and a friend moved the injured man to the side of the road, where he was left in the rain for around 40 minutes, despite witnesses expressing concern for his condition.

Tawake dismissed the serious nature of the situation and told bystanders that the victim was merely unconscious. Eventually, others intervened and moved the man to a sheltered area. When the police arrived, Tawake instructed them to take the victim to the hospital, but the man later died due to severe head injuries at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

The court proceedings will continue on Wednesday for final submissions, with Justice Rajasinghe expected to announce the sentencing on Friday.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior, particularly in situations involving alcohol. It underscores the need for greater awareness of the consequences of our actions, especially in community settings. The court’s proceedings may help bring a sense of closure to the victim’s family, and reinforce the belief that justice is served in society.

Summary: Police officer Fifita Toma Tawake pleaded guilty to manslaughter after fatally injuring a man in Suva. The incident occurred following a confrontation related to a traffic violation. The court is scheduled to issue a sentence soon, emphasizing accountability and the importance of responsible conduct.
