A police officer, 28-year-old Fifita Toma Tawake, has entered a guilty plea for manslaughter in connection with the death of a man in Suva earlier this year. The plea was made before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court in Suva, where Tawake’s trial was set to commence.
The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake and several companions were consuming kava at a venue known as JJ’s on the Park, now called DeVos on the Park, before driving home. When they reached traffic lights at Central St, a 47-year-old man was crossing the road as the lights turned red. The man tapped the rear of Tawake’s vehicle to indicate that it was ignoring the red light.
In a moment of frustration and while under the influence of kava, Tawake exited his vehicle and, without provocation, struck the man in the face. The victim fell onto the concrete pavement, sustaining serious injuries. Tawake and a friend moved the injured man to a nearby corner but left him exposed to the elements for about 40 minutes, dismissing concerns from witnesses about the man’s condition.
Eventually, bystanders assisted the victim, moving him to safety from the rain. When authorities arrived, Tawake instructed them to transport the injured man to the hospital; however, the man later died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital due to severe head injuries.
The case will continue, with final submissions scheduled for Wednesday. Justice Rajasinghe is anticipated to deliver the sentence on Friday, highlighting the judicial process’s continuation despite the tragic circumstances.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with authority and the importance of maintaining composure, especially when under the influence. It also underscores the necessity for accountability and the need for all individuals, regardless of their status, to prioritize the well-being of others in their community.
In a broader context, this case could prompt discussions on the effects of substance use on behavior and decision-making, sparking avenues for education on responsible consumption and the law.
