A police officer is currently under investigation amid allegations of drug-related activities. Security footage reportedly captured the officer purchasing what appeared to be drugs from two individuals at a market in the Central Division.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the officer has been suspended pending an inquiry by Internal Affairs and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). According to a statement, the officer has been directed to take leave, will be suspended without pay, and will have all relevant uniforms and accessories seized.
Mr. Fong Chew emphasized that any police officer engaging in corrupt activities or violating the law will face internal disciplinary action as well as criminal prosecution by the CID, with the possibility of being brought before a court. He underlined the importance of upholding the core values of the police force, stating that officers working against these principles have no place in the organization.
Furthermore, the Acting Commissioner is encouraging the public to report any information related to illicit drug activities. He reassured that all reports will remain confidential, and that breaches of this confidentiality will be addressed through appropriate internal measures.
Despite existing public skepticism regarding the police’s action against officers involved in illegal activities, Fong Chew pointed to monthly crime statistics released by the Fiji Police Force and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) as evidence of the organization’s commitment to addressing such issues.
This situation, while serious, presents an opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to demonstrate its commitment to accountability and integrity. Public engagement and vigilance can play a vital role in ensuring that law enforcement maintains its ethical standards and effectively serves the community.
In summary, the police officer’s alleged involvement in drug dealing has triggered a significant internal investigation, highlighting the force’s zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct while encouraging public participation in combating drug-related crimes.
