A police officer is currently under criminal investigation for allegedly engaging in drug-related activities. Security camera footage reportedly captured the officer purchasing what appeared to be drugs from two individuals at a market in the Central Division.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, confirmed the situation and announced that the officer has been suspended while the Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigation Department conduct an inquiry into the matter. In a statement, Fong Chew emphasized that the officer will be required to take leave before being suspended without pay, with all uniforms and accessories being confiscated.
Fong Chew reiterated the importance of law enforcement officers adhering to their core values, stating that any officer found engaging in corrupt practices will face both internal disciplinary action and potential criminal prosecution. He stressed that officers who do not uphold the law will not have a place in the Fiji Police Force.
Furthermore, the Acting Commissioner urged the community to reach out to the police with any information pertaining to the illicit drug trade. He assured that all reports would be kept confidential and that any violations of this confidentiality would be addressed accordingly.
Addressing public skepticism regarding the police force’s response to allegations of illegal activities among officers, Fong Chew pointed to monthly crime statistics and assurances that serious action is taken when claims are made. The message was clear: corrupt practices will not be tolerated, and the police force is committed to investigating all legitimate reports.
This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role that law enforcement plays in maintaining public trust and safety. It is essential for police officers to embody the integrity and ethics expected of their positions, reinforcing the community’s confidence that justice will prevail.
In light of this incident, it is reassuring to see leadership within the police force taking swift action to investigate and address misconduct. The proactive steps being taken not only aim to hold individuals accountable but also serve as a commitment to the principles of justice and governance that the Fiji Police Force is sworn to protect.
