The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has expressed support for Rusiate Tudravu, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). Chew highlighted Tudravu’s valuable experience, particularly his recent position as acting COMPOL and his comprehensive evaluation of the Force.
Chew emphasized that Tudravu is stepping into his role with a fresh outlook. He urged police officers to extend the same support to Tudravu as they provided to him during his tenure. Reflecting on his nearly two-year term, Chew acknowledged the various challenges encountered by both the police force and the Coalition government, stating, “We’ve done our best with the knowledge and support we had, always striving to serve the people of Fiji.”
During a ceremony honoring over 300 police officers, both retired and active, Chew encouraged continued support for the incoming commissioner. Each officer received a medal recognizing their lengthy service. Chew advised the officers to avoid distractions from internal issues and rumors, emphasizing that their primary focus should be on delivering services to the nation.
In his initial response, Tudravu acknowledged the leadership of Chew and mentioned that he intends to keep a low profile for the time being, planning to make a more formal statement at the appropriate time. Tudravu will assume his role as police commissioner next month, while Chew is set to return to his position as Deputy Police Commissioner after taking a leave.
This leadership transition may serve as an opportunity for renewal within the police force, bringing with it fresh strategies and perspectives aimed at enhancing community safety and overall effectiveness.
In summary, the appointment of Rusiate Tudravu as the new Commissioner of Police is viewed positively, with hopes that he will build on the foundation laid by Juki Fong Chew and lead the Force toward continued improvement.
