Police Corruption Crackdown: Inside Fiji’s Push for Transparency

The Fiji Police Force is actively monitoring officers on a suspect list and plans to introduce mandatory drug testing and investigate unexplained wealth to root out corruption and drug involvement within the organization.

Assistant Police Commissioner Internal Affairs and Professional Standards ACP Sakeo Ganivatu highlighted this issue at the recent Namosi Provincial Council meeting.

“I understand you’re well aware of this matter, where the very people we trust are involved in illegal activities,” said ACP Ganivatu.

“We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability within our organization.”

ACP Ganivatu identified greed as a root cause, possibly influenced by the cost of living and poor decision-making among some officers.

“Some officers may have joined with different intentions that need thorough scrutiny during recruitment,” he said.

ACP Ganivatu recalled a motto from the police academy stressing dedication over financial motives.

“If you’re joining the police because of money, you are joining the wrong organization. We, the police, serve from the heart.”

ACP Ganivatu reassured the meeting that officers involved have been held accountable with ongoing investigations and legal actions. He cited measures such as maintaining a suspect list, conducting drug tests during recruitment, and investigating disparities in officers’ wealth.

“As of now, we are committed to investigating those who are involved.

“We have a suspect list and we are actively monitoring them.

“We have introduced drug tests during recruitment assessment; once tested positive, they won’t have a place in the force. For the officers, once tested positive, they will be investigated.”

ACP Ganivatu said they would implement the investigation of unexplained wealth.

“If a new officer is found with a new car and a nice house compared to their salary, they will be investigated.

“It could be relatives’ FNPF money, but they will be investigated fairly.

“Those are some of the areas we will implement to elevate the issue of corruption and greed.”
