Winning back the support and confidence of our communities is one of our main priorities, said Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. He made this statement in response to public concerns over the high number of police officers involved in criminal activities, which has tarnished the reputation of the police force.

Mr. Fong Chew emphasized that police officers found committing crimes are dealt with in a very transparent manner. “We recognize that a key factor in achieving this goal is by enhancing service delivery and ensuring professionalism in our duties,” he stated.

He further explained that the handling of officers involved in criminal activities is well-known and not concealed. “When an official report is lodged against an officer, our Internal Affairs Unit investigates the conduct, and the Criminal Investigation Department takes over if there is a criminal aspect.”

“Due processes are followed, including seeking independent legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” he added. Mr. Fong Chew said they are transparent about these actions, as reflected in their monthly crime statistics which include the number of police officers charged with various offenses, aside from the reports released by the ODPP.

He also highlighted their commitment to addressing the issue of police officers involved in drug-related activities by reviewing internal policies to cleanse the organization of elements that bring disrepute to the policing profession.

Moreover, the force is striving to improve service delivery to the public. “Apart from addressing the issue of officers involved in criminal activities, we are also focusing on service delivery and ensuring we get the basics right,” he said.

Mr. Fong Chew acknowledged that complaints often arise from lack of feedback, poor handling of complaints, and slow response times. They are looking at training more middle managers and supervisors and holding officers accountable for their actions or inactions.

“I want to reassure the public that we are dedicated to improving service delivery and upholding the integrity of policing,” he concluded.
