Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has made a fervent appeal for the public to report any credible information regarding police officers allegedly engaged in drug-related activities. During a media interview, he emphasized the critical need to maintain the integrity of law enforcement and confront the drug crisis directly.

Mr. Fong Chew urged the public to come forward with reliable details, stating, “If police [are] involved, pass this information to us. I don’t want hearsay. I want credible information on who is involved, and we will take action.” He made it clear that officers found guilty of such misconduct would face severe repercussions, recalling recent cases where two officers had their pay and uniforms revoked and were subsequently taken to court.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he reminded police personnel of their commitment to their oaths and the serious consequences of participating in illegal activities related to drugs. “This is the worst-case scenario – dealing with officers involved in drugs. We will not hesitate to act,” he asserted.

Addressing the broader drug crisis affecting Fiji and the Pacific region, Mr. Fong Chew reaffirmed the dedication of the Fiji Police Force to combat the issue despite numerous challenges. “We’re confined in Fiji, but the region is facing a similar crisis. The Fiji Police Force is committed to safeguarding the population and future generations, no matter the obstacles,” he stated.

The Acting Commissioner expressed gratitude for the increased public awareness regarding the drug problem, noting that previously suppressed information is now more openly discussed. “It’s a good indication and awareness to the people of Fiji of how bad drugs are and how detrimental they can be,” he remarked.

Mr. Fong Chew also encouraged communities to take an active role in the fight against drug abuse, reflecting on the painful testimonies of those directly affected by drugs. He pointed to the establishment of the National Narcotics Bureau (NCB) as part of the national response to tackle the crisis, yet reiterated that the Police Force will persist in their efforts until the drug problem is effectively addressed.
