The Fiji Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has pledged a thorough investigation into allegations of police brutality that occurred over the weekend in Nausori. The incident involved Vilikesa Bari, a final-year maritime student at Fiji National University, who was reportedly assaulted by a police officer, resulting in significant injuries that necessitated his hospitalization.

Bari, 21, suffered serious injuries including a broken jaw, making it difficult for him to eat. In response to the incident, Minister Tikoduadua stated, “I’ve been informed about it, we’ll investigate it fully,” indicating that the authorities will take the matter seriously.

Reports emerged that the suspect allegedly approached Bari at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday at the Nausori Health Centre, where he had been admitted, and offered him $500 to keep silent about the incident.

In a broader context, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, acknowledged the damage to public trust caused by the alleged misconduct of a few police officers. He emphasized the force’s commitment to restoring community confidence and stated that measures are being implemented to address these issues.

Raikaci thanked the community for their ongoing support and reassured them that officers across the five policing divisions are striving to serve the public effectively.

This incident highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in law enforcement, and the commitments by officials suggest a proactive approach to rebuilding trust between the police and the communities they serve. Collective efforts may contribute to a stronger relationship moving forward, encouraging citizens to feel safe and respected while engaging with law enforcement.

In summary, the case of police brutality in Nausori underscores a significant moment for reform and improvement within Fiji’s police force, positioning the government and police as responsive to public concerns and dedicated to assuring justice.
