The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has pledged a thorough investigation into a police brutality incident that occurred in Nausori over the weekend. The case involves Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old final-year maritime student at Fiji National University, who was reportedly assaulted by a police officer. Following the incident, Bari was admitted to the hospital with significant injuries, including a broken jaw, which has made it difficult for him to eat.
Minister Tikoduadua expressed his commitment to investigating the matter, stating that he had just recently been made aware of the situation. “We will ensure to investigate the case fully,” he assured.
During a visit to Wainibokasi Hospital, reporters learned that Bari’s family has made allegations of bribery connected to the incident. They claim that the officer involved visited Bari in the hospital around 4 AM on Sunday, offering him $500 to remain silent about the assault.
In response to the situation, the police acknowledged that the conduct of a few officers has negatively affected public trust in the police force. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci stated that recent allegations regarding abuse of authority and subpar service have contributed to the erosion of community relations. He reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding trust and confidence within the community, mentioning ongoing efforts to address these issues through appropriate disciplinary actions.
Despite the challenges, ACP Raikaci emphasized the dedication of officers across all policing divisions to serve their communities effectively and expressed gratitude for the community’s continued support.
This incident highlights the importance of accountability within law enforcement and the need for trust between police and the communities they serve. The investigation promises to not only address the specific case but also to foster broader improvements in policing practices that can restore public faith in the institution.
As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that it will serve as a turning point for more transparent and responsible policing, ensuring that such incidents do not tarnish the reputation of dedicated officers committed to community service.
