A 21-year-old maritime student, Vilikesa Bari, remains hospitalized following an alleged assault by a police officer after a public brawl in Nausori on Sunday morning. Bari, a final-year student at Fiji National University, had been waiting for transportation with his cousin after attending a birthday celebration with his mother.

The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. when a fistfight broke out nearby. Bari recounted how the situation escalated quickly, with an unexpected punch hitting him and causing his phone to fall. As the fight gained attention from onlookers, Bari attempted to assist by calling for police intervention. However, he claims that an officer mistook him for being part of the conflict. Bari alleges that during his transport to the Nausori Police Station, the officer assaulted him with a torch and continued to beat him upon arrival.

Bari detailed the incident from his hospital bed, stating, “He threw a few punches, kicked me, and dragged me to a table,” while also alleging that the officer warned him against instructing them on their responsibilities. After being taken to the Nausori Health Centre for treatment, Bari alleges that the officer later visited him and attempted to bribe him with $500 to drop the case, a claim that has added to his mother’s distress.

Una Qionimacawa, Bari’s mother, expressed her shock and heartbreak over her son’s treatment, calling on authorities to take action. While the Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has yet to release a statement, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has ordered an immediate investigation into the allegations. A police spokesperson noted that officers are reminded to uphold the law and be accountable for their actions.

This incident occurs in the context of broader concerns regarding police conduct, underscored by the recent Fiji National Security and Defence Review, which highlighted persistent issues of police brutality.

In summary, the incident highlights serious concerns about police conduct and accountability in Fiji, while also showcasing the ongoing fight for justice from family members of alleged victims. It is crucial that the authorities rigorously investigate such claims to restore public confidence in law enforcement. Positive action could lead to necessary reforms within the police force, increasing accountability and fostering a safer community for everyone.
