PNG Rugby Union Suspended: What’s Next for the Sport?

The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has announced the suspension of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance issues.

This decision follows an extensive independent investigation and ongoing discussions regarding the organization’s failure to meet Oceania Rugby’s standards. The suspension is effective immediately and arises from recurrent problems, including PNG Rugby’s non-participation in major events like the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament.

Additionally, concerns from Provincial Unions about the actions of the board and management played a crucial role in this decision. As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting rights within the union and will be excluded from Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs, with funding to the union also being put on hold.

Frank Puletua, the General Manager of Oceania Rugby, stated the seriousness of the situation: “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.”

He expressed hope for the future, saying, “I am confident that PNG will activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage soon. The Executive Board remains committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its efforts to be recognized as a full member of Oceania Rugby again.”
