The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has announced the suspension of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance failures. This decision came after a detailed independent investigation and extended discussions regarding the governing body’s failure to meet the standards established by Oceania Rugby.
The immediate suspension stems from ongoing issues, including PNG Rugby’s lack of participation in vital events such as the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament. Additionally, concerns voiced by Provincial Unions regarding the board and management’s conduct played a significant role in this decision.
As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will lose its voting rights within the organization and will be prohibited from entering Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Furthermore, financial support for the union has been put on hold.
Frank Puletua, the General Manager of Oceania Rugby, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.” He expressed optimism that PNG will soon realize its potential in national and international rugby and affirmed the Executive Board’s commitment to helping PNG Rugby regain its status as a full member of Oceania Rugby.
